Without disputing the validity of your reasoning, I would point out that

the NYT has done that same thing--"reporting every rumor in real time" and "jumping the gun to aggressively push the more dire conclusions and perhaps not accentuate the twists and turns"--with regard to things harmful to Democrats, such as their coverage of alleged irregularities in the Clinton Foundation's finances as well as the ultimate nothing-burger of "but her emails" culminating in the so-called "re-opening" of that case by Comey 5 days before the FUCKING (excuse my French) ELECTION, and that's before we get to the whole Judith Miller mess w/r/t our ill-considered Iraq invasion way back during Bush II's first term.

The NYT sucks, and is in no way the monolithic tool of "liberals" that a lot of conservative snowflakes like to pretend it is.

one final point: it is my recollection that NOBODY ever believed that the Steele memo was literally true in every detail and every mention of it in mainstream media included a disclaimer to the effect that it was unproven and even dubious.
