I've enjoyed Meacham's And There Was Light: Lincoln

It is not a biography in the traditional sense, but a thoughtful look at Lincoln's sensibilities, especially about the issue of slavery. Meacham pretty much buys Herndon's informants as reliable sources.

After reading Chernow, I went back and read two Bruce Catton classics: Grant Moves South and Grant Takes Command. Catton was an outstanding writer. I still return to McCullough's 1776. Atkinson is good on the Revolution but McCullough makes the story sing.

Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin by Timothy Snyder was very good -- we tend to forget that part of WWII and its lasting aftermath. The "Good War" indeed.
