The carnage on Omaha Beach among the Rangers and 116th Infantry in the


first several hours was horrendous as shown in that opening scene. In A Company of the 116th alone, nearly 100 soldiers were killed on D Day. Most of the rest were wounded, making that unit combat ineffective. Among them were brothers, cousins, and longtime friends. That scale of death desensitizes people over a period of time, when more deaths become less consequential, especially the deaths of the enemy. WW2 is rife with examples of prisoners being killed and Normandy was no exception.
