Why? because that's the way we did it before mail and tracking tech?

seems like a good reason to me. Let's do it this way because that's the way we've always done it.

I'd like to think that participation is good for our democracy. Unfortunately, we have a lot of dumbfucks walking among us too so I'm not so sure. That said, participation = good.

I'm fine with taking steps to make sure our elections are honest and fair. 2020 seems to have been a banner year. I'm not fine with attempts to suppress. IMHO, today's GOP in some states is walking a pretty fine line (another reason why I'm having a hard time opening my wallet for GOP candidates or pulling the lever for them on election day - I value fair play and integrity).
