The entity that will take military action will be NATO, if any.
So, American forces will be front and center.
Any direct clash between NATO and Russia basically launches WW III. Then it becomes a lot more than just Ukraine in the crosshairs.
I suspect a time may come when something like that happens - viral feeds of civilian casualties over and over would probably motivate a no fly zone as the first point of direct conflict.
We should all be hoping to god that it never comes to that. First off, you can dispense with quaint, old 1930s vintage arguments about this being a European problem to which only the Europeans should commit forces. That world no longer exists. If NATO allies go directly to war with Russia, we are at war with Russia.
A war Putin can’t win. Which means all he could do is create a draw, by launching nukes. That is something we need to avoid at almost all costs. There are many ways this can become a mortal blow to Russia short of direct NATO-Russian conflict. And it is unfortunate and unfair that it rests so heavily on Ukraine’s shoulders. As a nation they did nothing to deserve this.
We should be moving heaven and earth to overcome the logistical problems of arming the Ukrainian resistance. We should be sharing real time intel with Ukrainian forces. We should isolate Russia and ruin their economy. And we should do all we can to prevent this from becoming WW III, which does mean trying to keep an off-ramp handy for Putin.
