There will be a cost to those sanctions, felt most harshly in Europe.

I think Ukraine is almost certain to fall in the near future, in some manner, but I think ongoing pressure from within Ukraine and from the rest of the world can make life very difficult on Putin. I think the only outcome the West really needs is to stop Putin's ambitions here, and to hopefully make Xi think twice about following Putin's lead in any way.

If it generates political pressure on Putin within Russia, all the better.
