For a political neophyte, Youngkin showed an impressive degree of deftness

.. politically in navigating the waters between keeping Trump at arms length so as to not alienate the center, yet not being seen as actively pushing him away (and, in the process, ticking off Trump and alienating the hardcore Trump voters).

Yes, McAuliffe's gaffe was arguably the deciding "death blow", but, without walking that tightwire regarding Trump, he would never have been in position in the first place to take advantage of that.

It was some impressive campaigning
