I can't stand Harry Reid, but the problem then was relentless filibuster.My

approach at that time would have been to require an old fashioned filibuster requiring that the floor be occupied. The moment the floor was vacated debate is deemed to have ended and a vote can be taken. I think that would have cut down on them significantly. But we are here mostly because of Mitch, and maybe Trent Lott before him. I don't think the Dole led republicans filibustered anything like the new generation of scorched earth republicans. The root of the problem is that 21 Republican Senators from 11 small states that represent less than 20% of the population can keep anything from happening in the senate. Worse, like I said before, the are completely unembarrassed by using that as a tactic for any damn thing that the 80% of the population wants. Again, THAT is the problem. Disagree if you wish about the solution. Reid tried one that you didn't like (neither did I) but the fault lies with the other party. And as I have said on here more than one, this is coming from a guy that used to be a registered republican but got out in the early 2000s as they started to go off the rails with this stuff.
