Yes, that is current standard practice for the millions of mail-in votes

in every election.

Here in Georgia there was actually a big lawsuit claiming officials were throwing out too many ballots in the signature verification process. The case was settled as described in the article linked below, with officials required to contact voters whose ballots are thrown out, which would readily identify fraud.

This is how absentee/mail-in votes work for millions of Americans in every election.

In your nursing home "X" signature example, if that voter had the identical "X" as his/her signature on his/her voter registration, that would pass signature match. But for someone to commit fraud based on that, you'd be talking about stealing, what, 200 ballots from a nursing home, hoping no one notices that none of the 200 people got their absentee ballots, signing all of them "X," having the ballots tossed for the voters who don't have "X" on their registration, hoping no one notices that a large number of votes got thrown out for one nursing home address based on signature mismatches...all to maybe have like 20 votes get through if 20 "X"s match and you don't get caught from all the other steps? For 20 votes? To get to 1,000 ballots, you're going to do that at 50 different nursing homes (hoping no one notices a pattern across 50 nursing homes!) just to cast 1,000 votes - half of which would have voted the way you wanted them to anyway, so you're only changing 500 votes if you don't get caught? Who is actually going to bother doing all that??

The push for expanded mail-in voting this fall isn't asking for some new, crazy process. It's just expanding a current process that already works to include more people. If some states don't have the infrastructure scale set up well to handle the higher volume of mail-in votes, let's get working on that now (for example, if they need more people to match signatures, etc.) to do what is needed to ensure safe, fair elections.

It's ridiculous to ask people to risk their own lives and/or the lives of people they love so they can exercise their right and duty to vote during a deadly pandemic - especially when all states already have absentee voting processes in place that could be expanded to reduce that risk to their citizens.
