Maybe I'm not remembering correctly. Like you mention the first time


I saw him I was very disappointed as well. Maybe it was Wolf Trap. I was seeing LOTS of live music back then. Seemed like he played every electric tune acoustic and every acoustic one electric. I even heard an interview where he said for years he was just tired of the music (his own) and even more tired of the audience.

Then he nearly died from the heart infection. Apparently it was a real wake up call for him. His shows and even his albums have been great ever since - including the incredible collaborations with Petty, Cash, Orbison, Harrison, et al.
