The president will be in Council Bluffs for an official visit to an ethanol plant, followed by a Republican dinner in West Des Moines, and Biden in Ottumwa for the start of a two-day Iowa swing.

One one hand:
"You know, Donald Trump and I are both in Iowa today. It wasn't planned that way, but I hope Trump's presence here will be a clarifying event. America's farmers have been crushed by his tariff war with China. No one knows that better than Iowa.

"He thinks he's being tough. Well, it's easy to be tough when someone else is feeling the pain. How many farmers across this state and across this nation have had to face the prospect of losing their business, of losing their farm because of Trump's tariffs?

"How many have had to stare at the ceiling at night wondering how they're going to make it? How many sleepless nights do you think Trump has had over what he's doing to America's farmers? Here's the answer: just as many as he had when he stiffed the construction workers and electricians and plumbers who built his hotels and casinos.

Zero."

"'With Trump gone you're going to begin to see things change. Because these folks know better. They know this isn't what they're supposed to be doing,' Biden said of Republicans in Congress." Biden said that it's "not naive" to say he will "work across the aisle" and "seek to find consensus." "That's not some old-fashioned way of doing things that no longer works. Mr. Trump rarely if ever speaks to aides about what he hopes to accomplish with what would be a hard-won second term; his interest is entirely in the present, and mostly on the crisis of the moment.

"He has shown no interest in formulating a new message for his campaign, instead continuing with the 'Make America Great Again' slogan from his last race and adding that he also wants to 'keep America great.'

"Mr. Trump has griped about traveling too much, but then lashed out at aides, demanding to know, 'Why am I not doing more rallies?' He insists on having final approval over the songs on his campaign playlist, as well as the campaign merchandise, but he has never asked to see a budget for 2019." NYT
