I don't think I rage, in general, but maybe you think my voice sounds different on the answering machine. Nationalism as a philosophy doesn't have a monopoly on love of country. It's set apart from other patriotic philosophies by its hatred and distrust of those defined as outsiders or outside forces, which can be used as scapegoats. Nationalism and all kinds of populism draw their strength from scapegoats.

"How dare citizens want to control their own destiny". I don't know who you're complaining about, but it certainly isn't Juncker. He says he'd love for the EU to stay whole, but he thinks a do-over of the vote in Britian isn't feasible. His belief in the rights of citizens to control their destiny outweighs his agenda. Imagine that. Principle above agenda.

The EU is pro-democracy and has been responsible for fostering it thoughout Europe, first in former axis powers in WWII, and later in former Soviet republics. It definitely went too far with the euro. It may have gone too far in the early '90s, when it started moving towards a United States of Europe. Maybe the coming nationalist wave will help bring back some balance, but that requires that the anti-nationalists keep them in check. Populists don't keep themselves in check.
