I was a firm believer that “hyper” kids just needed more discipline.

I was one of those “I can’t believe you drug your kids, just be harder on them, that’s what they need” guys. Until my son started struggling in school around the second grade. We took him to one of those learning centers and they suggested 180 hours of instruction to get him caught up. I called bs, thinking they were just trying to rip us off. We’re talking about an engaging, non hyper “normal” kid.

Then we talked to his pediatrician. He suggested getting him tested. It took him 3 hours to do a 1 hour test. And I felt like the biggest asshole because I refused to believe my son had ADD. We started him on Vyvanse, a slow release 12 hour drug. And the results were incredible. The drug didn’t change his personality one bit, and the only side effect was it was harder for him to fall asleep. So we gave him melatonin, problem solved.

He stayed on the drug until he started high school because he either grew out of it or learned what level of concentration it required to do his school work. He graduates in a few weeks, and just tonight he received an academic award for having one of the three highest gpa’s in English for his class.

I understand being chapped because some parents game the system, but be careful of “knowing” kids. All it takes is just one almost un-noticeable issue for a kid to struggle in school. Hell we didn’t realize ours had a problem and we were around him 24/7.
