By definition it would be the 50th percentile +or- whatever % you want to
use I guess. So yeah, I guess if you go from 44 to 56%, my statement would be wrong. But you also wouldn't be anywhere close to 120K (which is in the 90's % if iirc), and you would limit the "middle class" to 12% of the population.
BTW I'm also not sure how the new tax law, with increased tax level rates, doubling the standard deduction, and a hefty increase in the child tax credit could possibly take us from 47 to 44% not paying income taxes (a growth in economy and wages could), but again, I'll take your 44% as valid.
