Perhaps. The Dems were also caught in an inevitable "change for the sake

of change" cycle where much of the voting public -- particularly in the three states that mattered -- was receptive to throwing out the baby with the bathwater on an unconventional candidate like Trump (largely because they're stupid, misinformed, and believe lots of nonsense, but that's besides the point). We blame Hillary and she is largely to blame for running such an arrogant campaign, but I do not think Bernie Sanders would have won (he would have had a different set of problems). And it's easy to say Biden would have (and maybe he would have) but he never ran and never stood on a stage and debated Trump so we simply don't know.

I'm somewhat optimistic that the opposite will be true in 2020. Nearly 60% of the country flat out disapproves of Trump and no incumbent has ever been re-elected with those kinds of numbers. The midterms were an epic beatdown with turnout record-shattering and through the roof. The three states that matter swung very heavily back to the Dems. People are pissed and sick and tired of Trump's pettiness, stupidity, and ineffectual "leadership" if you can even call what he does leadership. So I think any number of Dems should be able to beat him. Especially if the economy isn't something he can brag about.
