To quote Julius in Pulp Fiction, allow me to retort:
1. Nevada has no coast, yet is in the west.
2. Colorado has no coast, yet is in the west.
3. New Mexico has no coast, yet is in the west.
4. Arizona..,.still red, but for how long? Pretty soon the "non-coastal Republican west" will be Wyoming, Idaho and Montana.
5. Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania--was this a one-off, or is this change permanent? IMO, it depends on how the GOP handles the next 2, maybe 4 years in power.
If I were a Republican my fear would be that our (well, Trump's, actually) mouth has written a check our ass can't cash on two major things: I'm gonna get my job back, and there's gonna be a BETTER replacement for Obamacare. But we will see.
My point is, what you are arguing is the current "mainstream" is based on the returns in an election which may, looking back on it 4 or even 2 years hence, may well turn out to have been sui generis.
