There is no reasonable defending of the Bannon pick.
If Trump truly wants to bring the country together, he needs to distance himself from, and openly denounce any association to Bannon and Breitbart. That website causes a significant amount of anger, fear and angst among its victims.
I had noticed multiple people here bashing Lena Dunahm recently. I just figured it was a left-wing celebrity hating thing (though it was odd that multiple people singled her out, as opposed to say Katy Perry). Then I read about a speech she gave the other night and how she went off-script and broke down because she has seen an uptick in personal attacks against her since Breitbart started targeting her. That leads me to think that people weren't just pulling her name from a hat of random famous liberals, these were Breitbart readers who were echoing the sentiments of that website.
So, Breitbart is clearly a powerfully persuasive tool. And it is a powerfully divisive website. Selecting Bannon as a top advisor destroys Trump's credibility of stating he wants a united country. Bannon's company, under his leadership, has shown a desire to do the opposite.
I don't think lefties like Reince Preibus either, but he's a reasonable selection for Chief of Staff of a Republican President, so there's no outrage. Yes, people pointed out the Drain the Swamp hypocrisy, but that's not outrage.
Bannon peddles filth, and a significant number of people will not look past it. Before the election, there was a plausible deniability defense that he just said crazy things to get elected. That defense goes away if he sticks with Bannon.
