That often gets lost in these discussions, as if the member of 'my tribe' or 'their tribe' who goes off and blows up a building is representative.

When a nutjob hears voices and opens fire on whatever group he has been trained to hate or scapegoat, I instead look around and say 'who has been fomenting hate and stirring the pot for the inevitable nutjobs.'

I recently did a deep dive on mass shooting data using a very extensive Mother Jones database, and the most interesting thing that came out of it was that up until recently, mass shooting sprees were almost exclusively initiated against people who were known to the shooter (at least the initial victims, and then the spree widened). Workplace shootings, or beginning with a domestic argument that explodes into general mayhem, etc.

But the more recent shootings now often include random victims who are instead chosen by their group identity or by opportunity. Shooting random cops for example, or pretty girls. This type of shooting spree, motivated by undifferentiated hate against a group identity, is now becoming more common than taking it out on the people you frequently interact with.
