If anything, this just helps Trump
Trump's only chance is to cement himself as the anti-establishment candidate. After all, it is the perceived failures of the establishment that got us here in the first place. Who could be more establishment than Paulson? Trump can get a lot of mileage just by pointing at the people lining up for Hillary and identifying them to be the problem. Besides, if we learned anything from Brexit, it is that common folk have less faith in economists than they do weathermen. For every banker this sways, there are 10 others who turn their shoulder at the idea.
Meanwhile the time for GOP solidarity is over. Having mainstream Republicans support Trump may actually have a negative effect for him. Why bother seeking their approval? If the Republicans running for Congress are upset that Trump isn't going to fill their coffers, well that's too bad. They should have thought of this before they let their party get hijacked by a guy who has nothing in common with them. Maybe, just maybe, they're the problem.
