The key phrase in this piece - "Blueprint for Conservative Utopia." I think it was effective to compare the results in Kansas and Louisiana to a mythical socialist utopia spearheaded by Governor Sanders of Vermont.

Real bottom line - Utopias spell trouble, almost without fail. The problem of course is that one can't necessarily hang economic doldrums entirely on bad policy, particularly in Louisiana, where oil may also be playing a part.
