My father, a UVa student, was in a ROTC like program

during the '40s. He had the choice of being an ensign in the Navy, or a second lieutenant in the Marines, he went with the Marines, completing the program & leaving school near the end of the war. Fortunately for him (a green 2nd lt. in the Marines preparing for island hopping in the Pacific), the war ended as he was getting ready to ship out. He wasn't unhappy about the the use of the bomb.

After the war, he walked into the law school at Virginia, applied, & was accepted - without having taken an undergraduate degree.
