budget deficit year by year and another that estimated receipts from Clintons tax increases. As I recall in a few years we went from a 200 - $300 billion deficit to essentially balanced (depending on if you count the SS surplus or not). Clinton's tax increased brought in something like 20 or $30 billion a year.

The term "Peace Dividend" was coined while GHWB was in office. In fact, I was working for a defense contractor in 1989 and lost my job when our big contract was cancelled. There may have been some opposition from some vocal GOP hawks but this was not controversial at the time.

We have Cisco, Microsoft, and AOL to thank more than Clinton, whose contributions amounted to about 10% of closing the deficit. Not at all insignificant but he did not balance the budget and he was not responsible for balancing it.
