Graduated in '84, and in those years UNC was the big hoops rival. Puke
Was a non-factor. UVA's arrival as a national power in '81 was confirmed by an OT win in Chapel Hill that caused probably the greatest spontaneous party I've ever experienced. Easters crashed down on C-Ville for a night, and the next day was almost treated like a holiday.
We didn't win again in Chapel Hill until 2000, and I made my first Sabre post the next day. I actually kind of hate the name, but I feel like I'm stuck with it.
This year is bringing me back to those great years of the early 80s in some ways - UNC knocked us out in he Nat'l semi final in '81; same matchup is alive this year. I like our chances this year. But in '84, a lot of us were thinking about UNC much they way people think about MSU now - they'd beaten us twice in the reg season and the matchup didn't seem to favor the impending elite 8 game against them, but then Indiana took care of the heels, and we beat them for the 2nd final four of my college career.
And we haven't been back since. I think we're due.
