I actually agree with you and both scenarios

You present are better for the GOP than trotting out Trump in a head to head vs HRC. In fact this is the year a 3 way race could prevent anyone from getting 270 EV and throwing it to the House. Trump just might be able to carry with a plurality a traditional blue state like Michigan or Pennsylvania and purple ones like Ohio (if he isn't running against Kasich) and Possibly Florida. And a 3rd party conservative might hold on to Texas and more traditional conservative states. Imagine the reaction if the House picks the president. Tensions are only going higher from here.
