is, honestly, what are they angry about? If we're talking about income disparity, the decline of the middle class, the drop in life expectancy of white males, the lack of social mobility, I agree with all of those and there are rational policies we can pursue to resolve them.

My problem with the Trump, and to an extent Sanders, is that the reaction to these problems is based on scapegoating somebody else, whether it is Mexicans, or Muslims, or Wall Street moguls. Their supporters are looking for a savior, and their saviors tend to focus on our emotions and baser instincts, rather than what we can accomplish together. Of course, this suits the folks with special interests. Get people arguing about abortion and birth control and gay marriage, get them to fear Islam and immigrants, and they spend no time at all about how you are going to deregulate and cut taxes for the 1%. Now maybe I'm scapegoating. ;)
