A purely popular vote would force both parties to strive for and align


themselves with majority views (i.e. democracy). It would mean more competition for the voters, rather than just pandering to a base that's inherently established. There would always be a small group of independents / swings that could still affect in either direction.

And I don't care who wins / loses, there should be no scenario where one candidate loses by millions of votes yet gets to hold office anyway.
