doesn't make it any less F'd up. Being a ward of the state should mean being a ward of the state. And that cost of incarcerating criminals should not be deflected in anyway from the taxpayers. (I'll allow for cheap or free prison labor to clean roads, make license plates, etc. although that too comes with valid criticisms) It's that very cost of incarcerating that should make us more willing to reconsider and/or shorten those incarcerations in some cases.

I love this line: "It's not rehabilitative." Shoot, I would argue it runs absolutely counter to rehabilitation as it incentivizes illegal behavior to even attempt to pay back these ridiculous charges.
