Well, if you keep reading in that article, it says his successor
who took over the CEO job last year has greatly increased investment and EV’s. And there is certainly speculation that the company believes the former CEO guessed wrong and has put the company in catch up mode.
Personally, I can see merit in the conservative approach Toyota initially took. The infrastructure required to support EV owners was always going to be a limiting factor, real or psychological. Early adopters were going to spill a lot of flower so waiting until the dust settled, economics improved, infrastructure improved, and then throwing full weight at the right moment, never seemed like a bad approach to me. And hydrogen certainly is an interesting possibility.
but it kind of seems to me that the former CEO is now trying to save a little face.
