Terrible bill because it didn’t cede immigration policy entirely to the
Minority which narrowly controls 1 chamber of Congress and not the other or the WH. Terrible because in politics you and your side have the mentality of a 5 yr old which accepts nothing if you can’t get everything you tantrum for.
It was a bill that undeniably improved matters at the border and would have removed the legal ambiguity over exec actions. It tightened up asylum rules at the center of the problem. Recent surges comprised around 10k or more daily crossings - this bill would require closure at 7500 in a day, and allow for it by law at levels far lower over a few consecutive days.
So it was objectively a very dramatic improvement. Nothing says repubs couldn’t campaign for stronger majorities and pass more restrictive measures if they succeed (which they didn’t do with majorities in both houses during Trump’s term). That option is exactly the same, even if they allowed this compromise to pass.
In the end, it’s only a bad bill because your cult leader informed you that you should think it’s a bad bill. Because he lacks the imagination to realize he could still campaign on the issue even if there were real bipartisan legislative progress. He showed that 10k-plus crossings a day are a-ok with him, as long as he can use them to film campaign ads. [Post edited by hoolstoptheheels at 04/19/2024 08:16AM]
