Until recently that was my position. Now we’ve seen how scrutiny of exceptions drives problems when women face crises. It’s not that they answer to political bodies in the moment of crisis. It’s that they answer to the judicial system, and medical crises move light years faster than the courts.

My issue is those crises can occur any time in a pregnancy. “Anywhere, anytime, for any reason” in week 32 doesn’t happen. It’s bullshit. It’s not human nature. Women are far likelier to decide to risk their lives to bring the pregnancy to term. But it should absolutely be their choice, without needing leave from the courts.

So, I’m for leaving it in the hands of women, their families, and their docs.
