How were those working out, huh? This aside from the fact that Iran was

emboldened in the region in part due to our disastrous intervention in Iraq. Saddam Hussein was a disgusting bastard, but a disgusting bastard who also kept Iran in check. We supported that guy for 20 years up until his invasion of Kuwait.

You may discuss whether or not that was a foreign policy blunder. A lot of what the US has done in the Middle East has been, up to and including Iraq and Afghanistan.
