I used to read political novels by Allen Drury. Recently I ran across Come
Ninevah, Come Tyre, written after I stopped reading him with Preserve and Protect. Preserve and Protect ended with a cliffhanger, assassination attempt of a presidential and vice-presidential running mate. Come Ninevah, Come Tyre and another book The Promise of Joy were alternate world sequels to Preserve and Protect.
Come Ninevah, Come Tyre concerns the VP candidate becoming President and then proceeding under political pressure from the left to appease the USSR. It was mostly silly, but it built to a horrifying conclusion as the President and members of Congress became tools of the Soviets to the point that, in the end, the US became a client state of the USSR. Again, I found it mostly implausible, but the left-wing characters in the novel parroting the Russian party line rang true to right-wing real life MAGAs justifying and glorifying Putin and the new Russia. It was damned near word for word.
That made it chilling. For the life of me I don't understand it. Definitely the opposite of the Republican party I grew up with.
