Across most of our vast country, personal vehicles are vital and key

to freedom of movement.

Inside urban corridors, one may have different opportunities for expressing freedom of association. But outside urban bubbles, the great majority of citizens must rely on automobiles to pursue individual pursuits.

Over the past few days, I took advantage of my personal automobile to travel from Roanoke to far Upstate NY to experience the Total Solar Eclipse. My gas-powered 2016 Civic averaged 43 miles per gallon, making our trip very affordable. However, I didn't factor in the $180 required to repair our windshield after a careless truck belched a rock at us just south of Scranton in I-81.

I think that people are willing to fork over disproportionate funds for automobiles because they offer the best opportunity to celebrate their personal independence and pursue dreams in this job-centered corporate world.

I don't know if that makes sense, but I guess that, deep down, we are a nation of romantics.
