I don't care what they say because this whole...
..."pro-Putin" stuff is utter bullshit. No one in the GOP is "pro-Putin". There are plenty of folks who question our policy vis-a-vis Russia generally and the Russia-Ukraine conflict specifically -- and that's fine because those are complicated matters with more than one possible policy response -- but asking those questions is not the same thing as being "pro-Putin". The people who toss around slurs like that whether in DC or on this board are just liars trying to stifle debate. Not worth a second of my time to engage on fantasy like that.
That aside, we could be natural allies with Russia based on:
-- Historical ties to western civilization
-- Strong Christian faith and values in both countries
-- Common adversaries/enemies: Islamic terrorism, China
-- Coopetition in international energy markets
The better question is why WOULDN'T we want to be allies with Russia? They are a formidable country with nukes and a shit-ton of natural resources and landmass. Makes more sense to be friendly with them than antagonistic, IMO. That doesn't mean we let our guard down or be naive, but we are much closer to them culturally and historically than we are to most of the rest of the world. No reason why we can't get along.
