"viability" adds subjectivity (which has to be battled out repeatedly in courts) that a certain date cutoff doesn't. And as soon as somebody survives at 18 wks, the argument can be made that this is "viability".

I would also say that we're not talking about when a decision must be made about a child you somehow know will be a premie. But rather, what is a reasonable amount of time for a woman and her partner to make a reasoned and well informed decision on whether or not to proceed with what is expected to be an otherwise healthy and normal pregnancy. I can certainly understand and accept the argument that this should be 20 wks for more advanced testing. But that's the problem with defaulting to "viability". That shouldn't be the standard IMO because viability at time of abortion isn't really the determinant on whether or not to get an abortion. I would almost prefer we then say make the cutoff at 24 or 26 wks if that's what you're arguing for.
