My son had a great American history teacher in high school, but as I recall
it was an elective. When I was a kid we started with civics in elementary school. In fourth grade we had a project with a guide book where the class had to build a hypothetical city from the ground up. Had to figure out basic infrastructure, government, education, police and fire, how it was going to be run, how it would be paid for, etc. It was outstanding because it taught us how communities work and how hard some of this stuff is.
It was a very memorable assignment.
