these guys on the ballot. Our problems run much deeper now, to the candidate selection process. This should be a wake up call for the majority of us that wanted to see a fresh set of candidates (even with an incumbent running).

The problems are more acute on the Hill. Gerrymandering creates another set of distortions, and I'm not convinced that equal representation in the other chamber is particularly useful at this point.

But this is how you end up with a takeover of the GOP. Besides the obvious issues with the candidate, the party doesn't even represent my values any longer. I have no idea why so many "Republicans" clinging to those 3 letters (GOP) and pulling the lever for MAGA candidates. They don't represent fiscal responsibility, limited (but effective) government, security, rule of law, global influence and prosperity. In fact, it is the opposite in many ways (fear, grievance).

Anyhow, until we address the issues upstream and get people more involved with the process, an extreme minority will continue to call the shots electorally (and be fleeced in the process).

And the pendulum could swing back. It just so happens that the party formerly known as the GOP has major structural advantages right now. It's POTUS candidate can get destroyed in the popular vote, and still win the election (comfortably). If Trump wins, this is what will have happened (for the 2nd time in 3 elections). Not sure that's really what anyone had in mind in the early days.
