is a constant broadcast of almost every possible viewpoint on every issue, often packaged very effectively as "the real facts" ------ there is nothing wrong with the government presenting what it sees as facts and then making a simple and clear recommendation based on its presentation. Yes, the government should be very careful about issues about which to weigh in, but recommendations directly related to ongoing or acute public health issies seems an important one.

You are absolutely correct about concern related to public trust of the government. But this has existed since Day 1 of the US and always will among some in society. It shouldn't be an excuse to be fearful on issues like this. Yes, public trust seems worse today. We should be concerned about this and ask why and what everyone can do better. I don't think a public agency shrinking back from making an explicit recommendation about the measles vaccine is focusing in the right area. This seems more like capitulation to the lowest common denominator that isn't going to help build any more trust or help as much as it could in a public health situation like this -- all based on too rigid a political philosophy rather than a real life approach to human beings and a healthy society.
