Well to be fair, "back then" Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and even southern


Colorado were "Mexico."

Real estate and water law work in the San Luis Valley of Colorado frequently involves Spanish royal land grants and water rights. The area was settled by Spanish/Mexican colonists in the early 1840s and wasn't ceded to the US until the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The Republic of Texas also had claims to part of it I believe, not resolved until some time in the 1850s. (Now they just bother us during the ski season)
