I don't have an opinion because campaign finance isn't an area I know
anything about, and I haven't followed the case, but isn't he being charged based on the investigation that led his former lawyer Cohen (a non-idiotic, non-incompetent--if perhaps ethically challenged--attorney) to plead guilty to a felony? I don't think that's something Cohen would have done lightly, meaning, they had the goods on him at least..
I believe Trump was "Politician 1" or some such name in that indictment, wasn't he? And Cohen's going to testify, in fact is required to, per his own plea agreement? And because Trump wanted a tax deduction for business expenses under Section 162, there are signed checks and ledger entries backing Cohen's story up?
Sounds to me like they've got enough to get to a jury. Maybe the defense can cast Cohen as a self-aggrandizing sleaze bag (he certainly is that!) who defrauded Trump(ah--there's the hard part)? We'll see I guess.
