As a healthy 37 year old on cardio meds, I can give you my experience
I have bad family history… maternal grandfather fatal heart attack in his 40s, and healthy, thin father had quadruple bypass in his 60s (he actually had 100% blockage and only didn’t have a heart attack because of the capillaries he built working out according to doc).
Anyway despite healthy lifestyle and diet, my LDL was high at my recent annual check up (like 180 or something), so my PCP put me on Crestor. Well … within 3 days of starting it, I found myself in the hospital for a week with rhabdo (a 1 in 100,000 side effect). Luckily with fitness certifications, they always teach about rhabdo, so I knew what I had pretty much right away.
Anyway, I’m now on repatha (injectable) which is a relatively new drug that is great, has basically no side effects and the only downside is that it’s fairly expensive (about $600/mo out of pocket). However, given my inability to take statins, insurance covers it for me and I pay $10/month. Luckily these new drugs exist because if I couldn’t tolerate statins, my only option as of a few years ago would’ve been a highly restrictive (likely vegan) diet and just hoping for the best.
But they started monitoring cardio stuff more closely for me at ~30. [Post edited by CharlestonSC at 02/15/2024 11:26AM]
