The idea that a country spanning 3,000 miles carved up into 50 distinct jurisdictions with 340 million highly diverse people could successfully self-select a single person — from among its political class, no less — to nominally lead the most complicated enterprise on earth is just silly. Of course it’s gonna suck.

Problem is, we’d never be able to agree on an alternative system or have any confidence it would produce a better president. So it is what it is.
