Yes, but from the 12th Amendment....


"The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves;" meaning for example, if both the Democratic candidates for President and Vice-President were from California, that electors in California would not be able to vote for both of them!

Having running mates from different states avoids the problem.
