Unless you think more than 50% of the GOP actually are "deplorables" who like that Trump quotes Hitler approvingly, some number of them support Trump because they have been given permission to do so by their friends and family, the GOP party, and the media. As long as everything he says gets excused by those people--and that shows no sign of changing--Trump will never turn off the GOP electorate. Somebody--really a lot of people--actually has to stand up and change their minds. Only a few people have tried, but the way to do it is for Mitch, GWB, Romney, Ryan, Liz Cheney, Kinzinger, Christie, Haley, and anybody else who has a spine to go on a national campaign to change the party.

GOP voters have been conditioned by the media they consume and their elected representatives to believe that no matter what the party does and what Trump does, Democrats are worse. A lot of people on this board (myself included) and around the country took stock of the situation between 2015 and today and concluded that simply isn't true.

As far as the prosecutions go, I believe there's plenty of evidence he broke the law for the various cases and that the federal cases are a slam dunk. Prosecuting a criminal (one who has been breaking laws and committing fraud his entire professional life BTW) is one part of taking away the permission structure that says Trump is ok.
