The Republican convention is about a month before the Democratic convention

Right now 54% of Republicans support someone other than Trump. It’s possible Trump destroys all of them before the convention. But it’s also very possible somebody else emerges from a bloody convention. The Democrats will know for 30 days who the Republican nominee is, and likely will know whether Trump decides to run third-party if it’s not him. At that point Biden, and the party could reach a mutual agreement for him to step aside. Then a real party begins to figure out who steps in.
While it certainly the most likely scenario I don’t think it’s a given that the next election is between Trump and Biden.
