I disagree with your premise. These guys are the direct descendants of the

Moral Majority and Trumpian support is directly plugged into the Evangelical movement overall. You can argue, correctly in some cases, that the leadership isn't particularly religious. But they absolutely know where their bread is buttered and these are the people, and the resulting polarization of religion in politics, that Goldwater was referring to.
