The reason for the discrepancy was the power players (Fauci, Collins) had a deep vested interest in the outcome (zoonotic origin) even though the furin cleavage site did make more sense in terms of some form of lab manipulation. This power broker influence extended to popular reporting (press releases, public press conference statements) as well as to professional scientific journals (Nature)

Mainstream media, scientific establishment, gov are all apparatus wielded by power brokers and must be treated with skepticism and constantly challenged and held accountable
