He feared, correctly, that LBJ would escalate it, so he voted for Goldwater and then Nixon, who both said they'd end it (though in different ways!). When Nixon invaded Cambodia, it was the last straw. He had liked McGovern, a WWII vet himself, in 1968. He went all in on him in 1972, though...what a disaster that was!
