They were always just meh relative to what else was going on IMO

"Boston" was released in 1976. Other better debut albums that year were released by The Ramones, Heart and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. It also had to compete with Hotel California, Songs in the Key of Life, Dylan's Desire, Frampton Comes Alive, Fly Like and Eagle and Night Moves.

"Don't Look Back" two years later had to go up against debuts from The Cars, Dire Straits, Van Halen, Kate Bush and The Police. Not to mention Waiting for Columbus, Minute by Minute, Stardust, The Last Waltz, Parallel Lines, More Songs About Buildings and Food, Some Girls and One Nation Under a Groove.

Mid to late 70s was a great time for music with crossovers and new genres emerging almost daily. It was a great time to be a kid in a record store.

I know Boston gets a lot of love in some corners but to me they were never much more than "just another band out of Boston". To each their own.
