I wouldn’t count on Menendez to do the right thing. And while I’m an
Innocent until proven guilty kind of guy, I think expelling him in this case, with this guy, would be appropriate. And not a political risk to the dem majority, so I don’t quite get why Schumer isn’t calling for it. He isn’t even joining the majority of his conference in calling for him to resign.
If repubs were more on board with sanctioning Menendez, the momentum to expel might become irresistible. But they’re also not even on board with calling for his resignation. Maybe one of those cynical cases of hoping he’ll run and win his primary, so they can flip the seat.
But it won’t work - Menendez’s tone deafness will reach epic proportions if he runs again. Looks like he’s poised to be obliterated in a primary.
At this point, of course the man is presumed innocent under the law and deserves his day in court, but this isn’t his first rodeo, and expulsion is not inconsistent with his legal presumption of innocence. It’s just saying he is under a cloud - again - which renders his service impotent. The entire senate should be on the expulsion train, and their failure feeds public institutional distrust.
